A 2010 study of 121 transgender people found that 38 per cent realised they had gender variance by age 5. White matter differences could provide independent confirmation that such children might benefit from treatment to delay puberty.
On one hand, this strikes me as an amazing breakthrough for recognition of gender variance.
On the other, this seems like a double edged sword; this makes me fear the possibility that this could be used to police those who wish to state their gender as being different to what they were assigned. It was a difficult journey to accept me, myself, as I am. It is an even longer and more difficult one to maintain to myself that I deserve to be as I am and that I further deserve treatment to make my body match what I want it to be. I feel wary of what could take my own validation away.
