Post reblogged from Yet Another Kiri Bloggish Thing with 6 notes
Earlier today, I reblogged a link to something which used “batshit” as a pejorative, without any comment. Despite reading the post and being someone who’s normally very sensitive to ableist language, I literally did not notice the word; apparently I’m so inured to it that I don’t always see it even when it’s right in front of me. I apologize. I will watch for that in the future.
The thing that I always wondered about, setting aside the ableist language, is why batshit is a particularly good measure or indicator? Is there something about bats? Why not cows?
Since I’m feeling particularly depressed and uncentred right now, should I be referring to myself as batshit or just garden variety?
Maybe I’m just over-analysing the myriad of ridiculous ways in which ableist language has spread throughout the world. OK, maybe not always wondered, but at least for as long as I remember.
