the deportations of people for *whatever* reason—dividing them from the families and cultures—from everything they have known for their entire lives—this is *banishment*—this is worse than a prison sentence.
Is this justifiable for *ANY* reason? for the worst of the worst—is it ok to dump that person in some other country for them to deal with? For somebody who is just having a hard time with life (petty thefts etc)—is completely destroying that person’s ability to access family, love, familiarity, culture, justifiable? in jail—at least a person can *see loved ones occassionaly*.
to make it a *crime* to see your family (as is the case with this previously linked deportation case and with all people who for whatever reason are sitting on one side of a border with family on the other) *unless the government approves*—is unjust, immoral, obscene, and yes, a crime against humanity.
Reblogged for truth, my bold.
Have you ever noticed how so much of the sanctions against people who have broken the law isn’t so much about rehabilitation, or even punishment? Just outright vengeance. Setting out with the thought in mind to hurt them.
I can only assume this is why there is such a big opposition in the UK to allowing prisoners to vote.
