SO HERE’S WHAT THERE NEEDS TO BE

thecurvature:

A FUCKING “UNDO” OPTION ON THE “MARK ALL AS READ” BUTTON IN GOOGLE READER.

This is not the first time I have accidentally clicked it. ON THE ENTIRE READER.

Also, here’s a fun fact. Did you know that when you hit “mark all as read,” you can’t go back into individual posts and mark them as unread again? The box disappears. Completely. There is literally no way — automatic or tedious and manual — to undo it once you have hit this button.

Now I do not doubt that I am a particularly clumsy and inept person, but I still doubt that I am the only person ever in the history of Google Reader to have found a problem with this.

Whilst I can help with this, I can also help prevent this from happening I hope.

Go to “settings” and select “reader settings” from the drop down. In the “Preferences” tab, under “misc” make sure “Confirm when marking all as read” is turned on. This will confirm marking as read when you have more than 50 items being marked.

Now for the actual problem; to go back to old posts, click on an individual subscription immediately after having either marked it as read. You will see a panel saying “<somethingorother> has no unread items” and a link underneath it saying “View all items.” Clicking this will reveal many already read items, and as you scroll should keep loading as many as it is able. At the bottom of each entry is a series of buttons, one of which is labeled “keep as unread” that will allow you to mark that post as unread again.

Good luck :)
